Staining Tips

Posted by on

Staining wood can be such a fun project, or a nightmare.

Always remember to protect your eyes with safety goggles and wear rubber gloves. Keep in mind, to wear clothing you are comfortable getting stain.

1.) Do a stain test before staining.

2.) Apply a thin layer on the item, leave to dry for 10 minutes.

3.) For oil-based stains, remember to stir the colour. Oil-based stains contain fumes, make sure to work in a ventilated area.

4.) Apply the stain with a brush or a rag.

5.) If you want a light tone, wipe the stain off. For a dark tone, leave the stain on for 5-10 minutes before wiping off.

Notes:

- Sanding is very important, before staining

- To avoid fumes, select a water-based stain (it is applied the same method)

- The stain is a colour and not a finish

- You can mix other stains to create a custom colour (never mix oil-based stain with water-based stain)
